Limited irrigation is focus of Colorado/Nebraska Crop Clinic

Farmers facing tighter irrigation water allocations will have an opportunity to learn about limited-irrigation practices for each individual crop, at the Colorado-Nebraska Limited irrigation Crop Clinic Dec. 2-3 at Sterling, Colo.

The clinic is jointly hosted by Colorado State University and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Registration forms are available at the front desk at the UNL Panhandle Research and Extension Center at Scottsbluff; or by calling the Panhandle Center at 308-632-1230.

Further information and registration forms also are available by contacting Bruce Bosley at Colorado State University at 970-522-3200, extension 285, or email – bruce.bosley@colostate.edu.

Registrations are limited and will be taken until the program maximum is filled.

The clinic’s goals are to provide education for farmers and their advisors about:

  • understanding crop-growth stages when water stress is and is not acceptable;
  • optimizing limited irrigation water for crops and crop rotation systems;
  • recognizing weed, insect and disease pest shifts under crop drought stress;
  • appreciating the benefits of leaving old crop residues for soil moisture and organic matter retention;
  • and developing a cost-efficient crop and crop system fertilizer plan.

On Wednesday, Dec. 2, the program begins at 8 a.m. with registration, and adjourns at 5:10 p.m. after a full day of presentations about limited irrigation practices, crop by crop. On Dec. 3, the program begins at 7:50 a.m. and the program broadens to include topics such as CRP lands, crop insurance, water quality, crop diseases, fertilization, and other topics.
Continuing education credits (CEU) are offered for licensed pesticide applicators for agricultural weeds, and also for certified crop advisors in the areas of soil and water (6 units), nutrient management (3), crop management (3), and pest management (2).
