Making A Difference
Impact Summary Reports
The Panhandle Research & Extension Center's dry bean research program
Nebraska dry edible bean producers plan anywhere from 140,000 to 200,000 acres of beans in a typical year. This production is concentrated in western Nebraska, the same area served by the Panhandle Research and Extension Center. One of the Center's missions is conducting research to improve dry edible bean production.
The Panhandle Center is unique in its approach to dry bean research, using a team of scientists from multiple disciplines collaborate to carry out projects. These disciplines include:
- Plant breeding
- Weed science
- Insect control
- Disease control
- Fertility
- Irrigation engineering
- Machinery engineering
- Plant physiology
Our scientists also collaborate extensively with the dry edible bean industry.
A recent highlight has been the addition of a dry edible bean breeder based in western Nebraska and the construction of a molecular laboratory and greenhouses to further enhance our ability to conduct research
